Ironbound

Katie Sawicki

I need the fall to remember who I was in the spring. I feel brown and dry. I could burn down, but you set me right. Nothing breaks my heart more than watching an old man hurt, who can't say a thing, who can't take a day to take it all in. I never liked me much, but I tried for you. I never held my breath for anything good. So won't you slow down, I'm not ready. I only know now, I should have bootlegged every moment. I miss our paper napkin maps. I miss the banging of the steam-heated houses, down the block from the Chapterhouse bar under the Ithaca stars. We filled that porch up with the sins of the church. Then we made love like it was all ours. And though the wind has stopped, I have an ironbound faith that we're not rusting away like the rest of them. I never liked me much, but I tried for you. I never held my breath for anything good. So won't you slow down, I'm not ready. I only know now, I should have bootlegged every moment. As long as there is room in the woods, we're always gonna carve a little space in them. Hanging out on top of our lives, just to slow up the aging in our bodies. I never liked me much, but I tried for you. I never held my breath for anything good. So won't you slow down, I'm not ready. I only know now, I should have bootlegged every moment. I need the fall to remember who I was in the spring. I feel brown and dry. I could burn down, but you set me right.
