For The Quiet

Katie Sawicki

Wooden walls tacked together. All the barstools to the right. I've been wandering my house for hours so I go wandering outside. I've been thinking about loneliness and what it means to learn to fight. The sweetness of a summer kiss is worth a drink at Mick's tonight. We are richer than we know as we struggle to write home. I'm not sorry for my life but it still overwhelms me sometimes. So will you open one more time for the sad and for the quiet, so we can carve our wooden bench and let the red wine settle in. Sleep it off again. It is the eighth day that it's rained and the seventh that it's poured. I am struggling again to shake off every single word. It's in the way that they all laugh at the way that we all cry. All the pompousness and crass break off one piece of me at a time. I'm not sorry for my life but it still overwhelms sometimes. And I know I'm richer than I know, but it's still hard to hope so long. So will you open one more time for the sad and for the quiet, so we can carve our wooden bench and let the red wine settle in. Sleep it off again
